Local Students Brighten the Roads with Saginaw County Road Commission’s “Paint a Plow” Program
SAGINAW, MI —The Saginaw County Road Commission proudly partnered this fall with Hemlock High School, Thomas White Elementary School, and the Saginaw Intermediate School District (ISD) for its annual Paint-a-Plow program.
Each year, Paint-a-Plow invites local students and community centers to help spread creativity and community pride by transforming the road commission’s snowplow blades into rolling works of art. The colorful designs created by this year’s schools feature themes of Michigan winters, community spirit, and roadway safety—all aimed at reminding motorists that snowplow drivers are out keeping roads clear and safe for everyone.
The students get the opportunity to be part of what SCRC does; their artwork not only brings smiles to our team and drivers but also helps raise awareness about winter safety on the roads. – Caitlyn Sanderson, Director of Human Resources
The student-painted plows will be out on the roadways this winter season, serving both a practical and inspirational purpose. Motorists may spot them clearing snow in various parts of the county as part of the Saginaw County Road Commission’s snow and ice control operations.
Winter Safety Reminder
With winter weather approaching, the Saginaw County Road Commission encourages drivers to keep these safety tips in mind when sharing the road with snowplows:
- Stay Back and Stay Safe: Plows typically travel slower than regular traffic and may make frequent stops or turns. Always keep at least 50 feet (about four car lengths) between your vehicle and a snowplow.
- Never Pass a Snowplow on the Right: Plows push snow and sometimes debris to the right shoulder. Passing can put you directly in harm’s way.
- Be Visible: Snowplow operators have limited visibility. If you can’t see the driver’s mirrors, they can’t see you.
- Plan Ahead: Give yourself extra travel time during winter storms and check local road conditions before heading out.
“Our snowplow drivers work long hours in challenging conditions to make sure everyone can travel safely, we ask the public to give them room to work and to use extra caution around plow trucks.” – Dennis Borchard, Managing Director
The Saginaw County Road Commission extends its heartfelt thanks to Hemlock High School, Thomas White Elementary School, and the Saginaw ISD for their creativity and community spirit. These partnerships help make winter operations not only safer but brighter for everyone who travels Saginaw County roads.
